Dry Eye Disease

What is it?

Dry eye is a condition where the eyes don’t produce enough tears or the right quality of tears to be healthy or comfortable.

Categories

Aqueous tear-deficient dry eye: is a disorder in which the lacrimal glands fail to produce enough of the watery component of tears to maintain a healthy eye surface.

Evaporative dry eye: may result from inflammation of the meibomian glands, also located in the eyelids.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but when the ocular surface is very dry it will overproduce the watery component of the tears as a protective mechanism.
